Zen gardening |

By Kathleen Bohné
“The all-meaning circle: No in, no out; No light, no shade; Here all saints are born.”
-Shoichi (1202-1280, Poems of Japanese Zen masters)
Now more than ever, it seems people are seeking new ways to deal with the increasing stress of everyday life. Forms of exercise such as jogging and yoga, hobbies like painting, cooking, knitting, anything that allows us to lose ourselves in personal, quiet enjoyment. One of the best ways to achieve this certainly must be gardening. The pleasures of fresh air, sunshine and watching things grow are some of the most profound we can experience. While a riot of flowers, herbs and fruits is familiar and beautiful, Zen gardening offers a different experience.
Zen gardens are designed to provide a harmonious sense of peace and serenity, a place to meditate and contemplate. Zen gardening is practiced by Buddhist monks in Japan as a means to achieving self-knowledge and understanding. Buddha himself reached enlightentment while sitting beneath a tree, and it is this level of knowledge that Zen Buddhists seek as well. These gardens are designed to assist in this effort and so remain visually constant year after year, unlike a typical Western garden. Sand, rocks and plants are used in a natural as well as spiritual manner and their pathways, created in a way that requires a careful tread, provide visitors with a taste of Zen philosophy.

ABOUT SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE |
About San Miguel de Allende , Mexico
San Miguel de Allende is a cosmopolitan and picturesque Spanish colonial city founded over 450 years ago by Fray Juan de San Miguel. Its beauty and near perfect climate have provided visitors with a truly spectacular experience. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains, San Miguel is steeped in culture, illuminated by colorful architecture, and hot with endless activities and celebrations. Many visitors from all parts of the globe have chosen to make San Miguel their home.
The unique juxtaposition of Mexicans and Americans that comprise its 80,000 residents has created a culture that is definitive and exceptionally appealing. San Miguel boasts a civility and charm that is comfortable, placid, and safe – and simultaneously full of excitement, seduction, and festive magic. Weather-wise you can’t beat it.
The center of the city is marked by the Parroquia, a cathedral that has defined the cityscape with its fantasy-like façade. Across the square lies the Jardin, full of gorgeous fichus trees surrounding a central gazebo where visitors and residents mingle and soak up the ambiance that is only San Miguel. Colorful walls line the cobblestone streets that emanate from this nucleus filled with cascading bougainvilleas and aged hand crafted wooden doors that mark the thresholds to ornate gardens and colonial homes that are truly stunning. Along these streets you will find restaurants of all cuisines, cafes, nightclubs, art galleries, gift shops, and museums. At night the Jardin transcends into a lively party, clad with Mariachi bands and street performers dazzling the crowd. You will often witness firework displays as sacred holidays are too numerous to count and celebrated with gusto. In San Miguel, there is a surprise around every corner.
San Miguel is an important tourism center rich with writing, photography, painting, and artisan workshops held frequently.
Recently, San Miguel has been marked by many prestigious publications such as the New York Times and Conde Nast Traveler in the top ten for relocation, second home, and retirement destinations.
